In a few months, this vacant space will metamorphose into Origin, an ambitious new indoor-outdoor nightclub and live music venue spearheaded by veteran promoters from L.A.’s underground electronic scene. As the nightlife landscape continues to evolve, Origin aims to restore the vibrancy and allure of downtown, particularly in an area that has recently experienced economic hardships.
The Legacy of Electronic Music in Downtown LA
The early 2000s saw electronic music play a pivotal role in reviving downtown L.A., attracting fans and fostering community amidst a previously neglected urban core. Origin’s founders, Roni Mehrabian and Cyril Bitar, believe they can tap into that legacy once more. With the post-pandemic challenges hitting Central City, they see an opportunity to reinvigorate the local music scene.
“People are hesitant to venture downtown because of their past experiences,” Mehrabian notes, addressing concerns surrounding safety and crime. He envisions Origin as a catalyst for revitalizing foot traffic and business, thus encouraging a more positive perception of the neighborhood.
A Familiar Venue with a New Vision
Origin will emerge from the remnants of Lot 613, a popular semi-permanent pop-up venue that hosted various events over the years. The dynamic surroundings blend a certain sophistication and grittiness, mirrored by the contrasting environments of nearby establishments such as the SoHo Warehouse and the edgy vibes of the new 6th Street Bridge.
City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado emphasizes the plight of downtown establishments, acknowledging the difficulties faced by local businesses, hospitality workers, and cultural institutions. In response, she has initiated a task force aimed at enhancing public safety and the viability of hospitality and entertainment sectors in the area.
Addressing the Needs of Modern Audiences
While the downtown landscape offers a handful of new venues, many have noted a lack of spaces for intimate gatherings, particularly those catering to electronic music fans. With the closure of beloved spots like Resident, a niche for venues promoting smaller events appears ripe for exploration.
For Mehrabian and Bitar, the transition from one-off shows at Lot 613 to a full-fledged nightclub represents a significant leap. Their familiarity with the venue and recent successes in the electronic music scene inspired them to seize the opportunity. “It’s an exciting time for this genre,” Bitar remarks, expressing confidence that there’s a growing appetite among younger audiences for more intimate, quality music experiences.

Origin is currently under construction, with a design philosophy aimed at retaining the urban warehouse aesthetic. Marc Dizon, known for his role in New York’s Brooklyn Mirage, leads the design team. The vision centers around an expansive open-air patio and a state-of-the-art sound system, merging the indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly.
The flexibility of the venue will allow for various types of events—from community gatherings to nighttime raves—ensuring a diverse lineup of programming. Bitar believes this modular approach will set Origin apart: “No other venue in L.A. offers this kind of flexibility, where we can support daytime cultural events and transition into vibrant nightlife seamlessly.”
