Breaking Barriers: Women in the Music Industry
The music industry is a vibrant and dynamic space that has captivated countless individuals over the years. Having navigated this world as both a music journalist and a DJ/producer, I’ve witnessed its evolving landscape firsthand. Yet, one persistent concern remains: the imbalance in gender representation. Despite the love I have for this career, the industry still heavily skews male, from agents and management teams to DJ line-ups.
The Gender Gap in Line-ups
Every day, as I scroll through Instagram and TikTok, I am confronted with festival line-ups that are predominantly male. In the UK, Europe, and worldwide, it’s disheartening to see shows featuring line-ups that lack female representation. So often, there might be just one token woman on a bill of ten—a practice that feels more like a box-ticking exercise than a genuine effort at inclusivity.
This imbalance isn’t just a fleeting issue; it’s been a persistent battle. While there are signs of progress, it’s painfully slow. Each time I analyze a line-up, I find myself envisioning numerous female artists who would fit seamlessly, yet are often overlooked. However, recent developments provide a spark of hope for meaningful change.
Historic Moves: All-Female Residencies
A groundbreaking step has been made with Hï Ibiza announcing its first all-female residency, featuring MESTIZA and Indira Paganotto. This summer, they will take over Sundays with 19 nights dedicated to showcasing incredible female talent. This not only marks a significant step for Hï Ibiza but also signals a shift in the overarching narrative surrounding female artists in the electronic music scene.
Celebrating International Women’s Day
The timing of this residency is especially poignant as it coincides with International Women’s Day on March 8. This annual celebration honors the social, cultural, economic, and political achievements of women, while also advocating for faster progress toward gender equality. Growing from early 1900s movements for labor rights and voting, International Women’s Day embodies the fight against outdated norms and practices in various fields, including the music industry.
It serves as a reminder that it’s essential to genuinely commit to change—not just through lofty declarations, but by actively seeking to uplift women in the music scene. This includes providing headline slots instead of relegating women to warm-up acts, thereby creating real opportunities for representation.
Spotlight on MESTIZA
In this historic residency at Hï Ibiza, MESTIZA is a duo that perfectly embodies what this movement seeks to achieve. With flamenco roots fused with modern electronic music, their performances are a vibrant testament to cultural heritage and innovation. Formed in 2021, MESTIZA brings both ancestral sounds and futuristic vibes—making their role as the first female act to headline a full summer residency essential. Their second album, Spanish Chica, scheduled for release in April 2026, highlights their growing influence in the music landscape.
The Power of Indira Paganotto
In addition to MESTIZA, Indira Paganotto complements the line-up with her own unique energy. Growing up in a musically rich environment thanks to her DJ father, she seamlessly transitions from ’90s Disco to underground Techno. Her eclectic style and unmatched passion make her one of Spain’s standout electronic artists today. Indira’s ability to captivate audiences ensures that her role alongside MESTIZA is equally crucial in shifting the gender balance in Ibiza.
Challenging the Status Quo
Although Ibiza is renowned for its world-class nightlife, its line-ups continue to be predominantly male, especially in high-profile positions. While there exists a vocal desire for change, the reality is still stark. The same few names tend to circulate, creating a repetitive cycle that fails to recognize the depth of talent available.
As one of the most influential clubbing ecosystems globally, Ibiza can set trends that resonate far beyond its shores. When a venue like Hï Ibiza supports an all-female residency, it sends a powerful message: Women are not merely support acts; they are, and should be, the focus.
Acknowledging the Trailblazers
It’s crucial to acknowledge that the journey toward gender parity in the music industry is longstanding. Female pioneers such as Smokin’ Jo, Jo Mills, Clara Da Costa, Vicky Devine, and Sarah Main paved the way in the ’90s and early 2000s, demonstrating that women can command the attention of large crowds and carve out formidable careers in a field dominated by men.
MESTIZA and Indira Paganotto build upon this foundational work, inspiring future generations while challenging existing norms. Their performances encourage clubs to reevaluate their line-ups, asking why talent is overlooked when it’s abundantly present.
The Road Ahead
This groundbreaking residency serves as a blueprint for the future of the music industry. It illustrates that when decision-makers prioritize talent, creativity, and representation over traditional norms, significant change can occur. Although the music industry still has hurdles to overcome, initiatives like this show tangible progress rather than mere rhetoric.
If more venues take a cue from Hï Ibiza, we might finally witness line-ups that reflect the diverse pool of talent available, providing greater visibility and opportunities for women. The talent has always existed; the industry just needs to open the door wider for it to shine.
