Navigating the Music Industry: The Journey of Dahan Law Group and Funkshway
Getting Started in Music
The journey into the music industry often begins with a passion—an inclination to create, promote, and connect through sound. My entry into music was deeply hands-on, rooted in DJing, producing, and event promotion. These early experiences allowed me to appreciate not just the beats and melodies, but the intricate handshake that brings music to life—building a scene, filling a venue, and creating unforgettable moments around tracks and live performances.
During my college years, I broadened my horizons through internships at major powerhouse institutions like Columbia Records, Live Nation, and WME. This phase was pivotal; it offered an in-depth view of the diverse facets of the music industry—the label side, the live performance side, and the agency landscape. I soon realized that a fundamental aspect of an artist’s journey hinges on the business structures, contracts, and rights governing their work. It became clear to me that understanding these legal intricacies could significantly impact an artist’s career trajectory. This revelation paved the way for my decision to pursue law school—not as an outsider peering into the music scene, but as an insider wishing to grasp the business dynamics at the highest level.
The Birth of Dahan Law Group and Funkshway
Transitioning into the role of a music attorney, I established Dahan Law Group, which then set the stage for launching Funkshway. After spending seven years practicing music law, I felt empowered to create a music label that aligned with my accumulated knowledge and experiences. My role has always straddled the line between legal expert and creative collaborator—helping artists, producers, managers, and labels navigate their business landscapes, structure beneficial deals, and protect artistic rights. This commitment to supporting artists culminated in the birth of Funkshway, which emerged as a natural extension of my journey.
Both Dahan Law Group and Funkshway share a unified mission: to foster and empower artists and music entrepreneurs in carving out sustainable, impactful careers. This dual perspective has allowed me to engage with the music industry from various angles, ensuring that the knowledge I gained as an attorney directly informs my work as a label founder.
A Holistic Approach to Artist Development
Working simultaneously as a music attorney and label founder grants me a unique, multifaceted view of artist development. I approach the careers of artists more holistically. As a music attorney, my focus transcends mere legalities; I am committed to helping artists safeguard their rights, assemble the right team, and learn how to leverage their positions strategically.
When I step into the shoes of a label founder, my focus shifts to cultivating the artist’s complete identity—their sound, vision, audience, and overall branding. With my background as a DJ immersed in dance music, I have developed a keen instinct for crafting impactful soundscapes that resonate with audiences. Moreover, because I represent a network of artists and creative professionals as a lawyer, I can facilitate collaborations that enrich the artists’ creative endeavors.
Once an artist’s music is shaped, I help connect them to key industry players—DSP editors, marketers, and DJs—who can amplify their exposure. The legal foundation I’ve built serves as a strong backbone, while the creative aspects allow me to play an active role in their development. Instead of merely advising from an external viewpoint, I am directly involved in nurturing and building their careers.
Significant Moments: AYYBO and RØZ’s Coachella Debuts
Recent highlights in the careers of AYYBO and RØZ, both making their Coachella debuts, serve as poignant reminders of the extensive groundwork laid prior to such milestones. When an artist graces a stage like Coachella, the culmination of hard work becomes visible to the public; however, what often goes unnoticed is the meticulous planning, development, and strategic decision-making that shadows such moments.
With AYYBO, our approach was methodical. We dedicated considerable time refining his sound and establishing his visual identity and brand. Strategically curated collaborations elevated his profile and helped us build a vibrant live community around him. Similarly, the journey for RØZ involved an intricate legal and advisory process, all designed to ensure that the core of the music was fortified by a robust support system encompassing the artist’s team, business operations, and brand identity. Coachella isn’t simply a booking—it epitomizes the synthesis of smaller creative and strategic choices that converge into a significant opportunity.
The Path to Growth: Building Lasting Careers
When reflecting on the artists I’ve had the privilege of guiding from their early careers, several common threads emerge—habits and decisions that cultivate their growth into respected names within the industry.
The artists who flourish often do so because they treat their careers with seriousness long before public validation arrives. They maintain consistency, communicate effectively, and continually strive for improvement. Their authenticity resonates deeply; they’re not merely mirroring trends but are instead sculpting their identities based on genuine experiences and beliefs.
Creatively, they know the importance of leveling up. As they advance, they seek out collaborations with high-caliber producers, designers, and creative teams, recognizing that each phase of their careers demands increasingly refined execution. On the business side, they pursue smart deals, understand their rights and obligations, and uphold their commitments with integrity. This foundational professionalism is crucial. The music industry is inherently relational, and artists who thrive recognize that their reputation plays an instrumental role in shaping their long-term success.
