Richie Hawtin Bullfrog Drums is now officially available, marking the first hardware drum machine created by the techno pioneer in collaboration with Latvian instrument manufacturer Erica Synths.
Originally revealed as a prototype two years ago, the instrument immediately attracted attention within hardware and modular communities for its unusual combination of classic drum machine sequencing, hands-on sampling and educational workflow design.
The final version of Bullfrog Drums arrives as a seven-voice drum machine blending 909-inspired programming with extensive sample manipulation features and modular connectivity.
At its core, the instrument is built around flexibility rather than strict emulation. While the sequencing workflow clearly draws inspiration from classic drum machine architecture, Bullfrog Drums focuses heavily on customization and performance-oriented sound shaping.
The machine ships with seven factory sample banks, while users can load an additional 16 banks of custom material through multiple input methods. Samples can be recorded directly using the built-in microphone, imported through the rear audio input or transferred via USB connection.
Each sound can then be manipulated independently through controls for pitch, decay, pan, loop position, cutoff, resonance and drive. Parameter automation and locks are available per sequencer step, allowing for evolving patterns and dynamic rhythm programming commonly associated with modern techno and modular performance setups.
The sequencer itself supports up to 64 steps and includes features such as ratcheting, probability controls and micro-timing adjustments, placing the instrument firmly within contemporary live electronic music workflows rather than simple vintage recreation territory.
Richie Hawtin Bullfrog Drums also includes built-in CV and Gate outputs, allowing the machine to sequence external analogue synthesizers and modular systems directly. Combined with its internal speaker and compact layout, the unit appears designed equally for studio experimentation, educational use and live performance environments.
The collaboration continues a growing relationship between Hawtin and Erica Synths. The two previously worked together on the Bullfrog Synth, a semi-modular educational instrument aimed at helping users understand subtractive synthesis through hands-on experimentation rather than traditional technical instruction.
According to Erica Synths, Bullfrog Drums follows the same philosophy. The company describes the machine as optimized not only for drum programming, but also for learning sampling techniques, sequencing concepts and hardware integration within broader electronic music setups.
That educational angle feels especially relevant at a time when many younger producers first encounter music production entirely inside software environments. Rather than replicating DAW workflows, Bullfrog Drums appears designed to encourage tactile interaction and experimentation through physical hardware.
The release also arrives during a larger resurgence of interest in standalone hardware instruments across techno, house and live electronic performance culture. As more artists move back toward hybrid and fully hardware-based setups, devices combining sequencing, sampling and modular compatibility continue gaining momentum.
Richie Hawtin Bullfrog Drums is available now directly through Erica Synths for €600 plus VAT.
