Stefan Krachanov, the Bulgarian DJ, promoter and cofounder of Metropolis Music, has died at the age of 64.
The news was confirmed by Metropolis in a statement shared on Instagram on June 10th, where the organization described Krachanov as a dear friend and one of the most important figures in Bulgaria’s electronic music community. According to local reports, he passed away following a short illness.
Known professionally as DJ Steven, Krachanov was widely regarded as one of the founding architects of Bulgaria’s modern electronic music scene.
Born in 1962, he began DJing professionally during the late 1980s, at a time when electronic dance music was still finding its place in Eastern Europe. His profile rose significantly in 1993 after winning Bulgaria’s first-ever DMC Championship, an achievement that helped establish him as one of the country’s leading DJs. As part of the Tall, Fat & Small crew, he later represented Bulgaria at the prestigious DMC World Finals in London.
Perhaps his most enduring contribution came in 1997, when he cofounded Metropolis Music. Over the following decades, the promoter would become Bulgaria’s most influential electronic music organization, helping introduce generations of clubbers to international house and techno culture.
Through his work as both resident DJ and booker, Krachanov played a central role in bringing globally renowned artists such as Carl Cox, Sven Väth, John Digweed, Sasha, Jeff Mills, Josh Wink and Ben Klock to Bulgarian audiences. These events helped establish Bulgaria as an increasingly important destination on the international electronic music map.
Beyond his work as a promoter, Krachanov remained active as a performer and producer throughout his career. Under the name Stevo Kurt, he released music through his own Mekanika Recordings imprint while continuing to perform regularly across the country.
For many within the Bulgarian electronic music community, DJ Steven’s impact extended far beyond the booth. His dedication, vision and commitment helped build the foundations upon which the country’s house and techno scenes continue to thrive today.
His passing marks the loss of a true pioneer whose influence will be felt for years to come. 🖤🎶
