EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“Everybody On The Floor” feels like a command rather than a suggestion—what moment or mindset inspired that energy?
To be totally transparent, ‘Everybody On The Floor’ is a Splice sample. When I first heard it, I knew it was perfect! A lot of my music comes from happy accidents or intuitive feelings about what works. This track is all about getting down on the dance floor and connecting with others. It’s a reminder to put your worries aside and just live in the moment.
The track has this playful, almost cheeky personality baked into the basslines—how do you approach injecting humor or attitude into your sound?
I genuinely love humor and play. Playfulness is an essential skill that we often overlook as artists and adults. It allows us to connect with our inner child, make new ideas, and bond with others. When I add humor or attitude into my sound, it stems from that playful spirit—taking what inspires me musically and having fun with it.
Your upbringing spans the UK, Malaysia, and Hong Kong—can you hear any of those cultural influences sneaking into this particular track?
Absolutely. My Eurasian background has shaped how I approach music. Hong Kong is a cultural melting pot influenced by Western and Eastern elements, and I believe this diversity adds a special touch to an artist’s sonic identity. For this track, I aimed to blend my musical influences cohesively without overwhelming the listener.
There’s a strong groove here, but also a lot of subtle detail—what was the most obsessive tweak you made while finishing this one?
I love what I call “ear candy”—those details that captivate the listeners. I spent a lot of time perfecting the 8-bit melodic arpeggiated highlights that complement the deep bass. I layered different sounds to make them “sparkle.” It felt like creating a layer of glitter that enhances the driving bass, and the satisfaction from piecing it all together was immense.
You’ve cited artists like Daft Punk and JOYRYDE as inspirations—where do you think “Everybody On The Floor” sits on that spectrum of influence vs originality?
That’s a great question! While we are all products of our influences, it’s about how we filter those ideas and create something unique. For Everybody On The Floor, my inspirations shaped the track, resulting in a sound that feels both original and influenced.
This release leans into deep bass house—was that a deliberate lane choice, or did the track naturally evolve into that space?
I usually let the track lead the way. Initially, I wanted to create a ‘Colour House’ track, but as I composed, other sounds began to influence my decisions. I often have a reference point but trust my intuition to steer the direction. My choices reflect the musical conversation happening within the song and how every element fits together.
If you could drop this track in any setting in the world, where would it be and what would the crowd look like?
That’s a challenging question! I believe this track could thrive in various settings—from big festivals to intimate house parties. If I had to choose, I’d say the Shambala music festival. The vibe there perfectly aligns with Everybody On The Floor, allowing people to truly lose themselves in the music.
Your music often blends genres like they’re ingredients in a sonic smoothie—what “unexpected ingredient” did you sneak into this one?
I love the “sonic smoothie” analogy! For this track, I’d say it incorporates a halftime Dubstep moment inspired by Skrillex and Daft Punk’s vocoder elements. It creates a stark contrast, merging all the elements I adore in bass and electronic music.
You’ve released across various labels before—what made UFO Recordz the right home for this track?
Choosing the right label is crucial. For a diverse track like this, UFO Recordz felt like the perfect fit. The label welcomed me warmly, and I value working with entities that share my goals and align with my values. It’s important to feel understood and cared for, and I found that at UFO Recordz.
Zooming out a bit—how does “Everybody On The Floor” reflect where you are right now, both musically and personally?
I always challenge myself, and this track embodies my current identity and influences. Musically, it’s a departure from my previous Future Funk releases, but it shares a common thread of genre fusion. This song represents a significant milestone in my artistry, showcasing the skills I’ve honed over the past decade. I’m incredibly proud of it and excited for the future evolution of my sound.
