A Celebration of Legacy: 20 Years of Paxahau Stewardship
This year marks a significant milestone in Movement’s history: the 20th anniversary of its stewardship under Paxahau, the Detroit-based events firm that took the reins in 2006. The festival was originally established in 2000 as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, with early oversight provided by pioneering techno figures like Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.
Acknowledging this monumental journey, Jason Huvaere and Sam Fotias from Paxahau received testimonial resolutions from the Detroit City Council earlier this week. Their work has been instrumental in safeguarding and promoting Detroit’s vibrant music legacy. Fotias, also the president of Audio Rescue Team, has played a crucial role in overseeing the festival’s sound production.
Detroit Techno Week: A Citywide Celebration
The festivities are strengthened by a city-wide proclamation from Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, declaring May 18-25 as Detroit Techno Week. The proclamation emphasizes Movement’s status as “one of the longest-running dance music events in the world,” while promoting local and international awareness of Detroit’s creative talents and cultural depth.
A New Aesthetic: Revitalizing Performance Spaces
This year also sees significant aesthetic changes across various festival stages. The Movement main stage, Pyramid Stage, and Stargate Stage have all been given a fresh look, with updates to structuring, banners, signage, and lighting systems. This improvement aligns with Paxahau’s aim to provide an experience that resonates deeply with both attendees and performers, breathing new life into familiar spaces.
Curated Performances: Celebrating Roots and Heritage
The 2026 lineup boasts over 115 artists, including special curated performances that honor Paxahau’s journey and its ties to Detroit’s cultural roots. Notably, iconic musicians like Kevin Saunderson will revisit his late-‘90s E-Dancer project with his son Dantiez. Carl Craig will make a rare appearance under his “69” moniker, paying homage to his birth year, while Eddie Fowlkes is set to present an exciting back-to-back set with the Martinez Brothers.
Headliners that Set the Stage
The headliners set to grace the main stage include Sara Landry, who will make history as the festival’s second-ever female headliner, Carl Cox, and Dom Dolla. Each has a unique approach and style that guarantees an electrifying atmosphere, pushing the boundaries of electronic music. Landry follows the footsteps of Charlotte de Witte, who previously held the same honor in 2023 and 2025.
Artistic Integration: Tony Whlgn as Artist-in-Residence
Adding an additional layer of richness to the festival, Tony Whlgn has been named the 2026 artist-in-residence. His works, collectively titled “Universal Sound Systems,” will adorn Hart Plaza through murals and installations, blending visual art with the sonic experience of Movement. This artist-in-residence program is part of a long-standing collaboration with the local art gallery 1XRUN.
Festivities Beyond Hart Plaza
The energy of Movement will extend beyond Hart Plaza with a plethora of afterparties across Detroit, promising non-stop entertainment well into the early morning hours. This includes 11 officially sanctioned Paxahau events, allowing festival-goers to continue the celebration beyond the festival grounds. A detailed afterparty schedule can be found here.
