ROTHBURY, Mich. — In a deeply unsettling incident that has left the Electric Forest music festival community reeling, investigators are still seeking answers regarding the tragic discovery of a newborn infant found deceased at the festival on Sunday morning. As of Monday, authorities revealed that they have no new leads in the investigation into this heartbreaking event.
According to Michigan State Police (MSP), a restroom vending company employee stumbled upon the body of the neonate—defined as a newborn infant who is four weeks old or younger—inside a portable restroom situated in the festival camping area at approximately 7:50 a.m. The harrowing discovery prompted a swift response from law enforcement, leading to a lockdown of the Double JJ Resort, which hosts the festival.
Lt. Pat Agema, a Public Information Officer from MSP, has indicated that the infant will undergo an autopsy, though he cautioned that the process, along with the resultant toxicology tests, may take considerable time to yield results. “It’s going to take some time,” he explained, emphasizing the complexities involved in determining the cause of death.
Following the grim discovery, police conducted interviews with festivalgoers before the event concluded on Sunday night, yet they confirmed that no substantial leads had yet emerged. Lt. Agema noted that despite the circumstances, the festival itself remained largely undisturbed aside from an increased police presence, with many attendees reportedly unaware of the tragedy until after the festival ended.
With concerns for the infant’s mother at the forefront of the investigation, MSP is urging anyone with information related to the case to reach out. “Our concern is if the female gave birth to the baby there,” Agema stated, expressing the urgency of finding out whether she is safe and in need of assistance. The police are actively soliciting tips from the public via the Michigan State Police website.
The festival’s organizers expressed their sorrow over the incident in a heartfelt Facebook post that evening, stating, “Forest Family, it causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you.” They implored the community to assist law enforcement in any way possible, acknowledging the heartache felt by all involved.
Donel Dunn, a festivalgoer, shared his observations of the mood after the news broke, describing it as one of “disappointment, like sadness.” He noted that while many attendees were initially unaware of the situation, those who were informed felt a profound sense of shock and concern. Dunn reflected on the recklessness surrounding such a heartbreaking situation, questioning how someone could endanger a child’s life in this manner.
The Electric Forest festival, known for its vibrant celebration of electronic dance music and an immersive forest atmosphere, had reached its fourteenth year, culminating in a sold-out event on Sunday. As the music faded and the last attendees departed, the shadow of this tragic incident loomed large, prompting discussions about safety, responsibility, and the festival community’s collective grief.
