Seka: The Rising Star of FLAMENCA and the Story Behind ‘Cuccú’
Seka is quickly carving out a name for himself in the dance music scene, buoyed by overwhelming support from some of the industry’s heavyweights. Having recently released his latest single, ‘Cuccú,’ on FLAMENCA Records, he has garnered attention from prominent figures such as Danny Howard, Arielle Free, Jaguar, Jeremiah Asiamah, and Annie Mac. With additional club endorsements from Fatboy Slim, Mark Knight, Solardo, MK, Sonny Fodera, and Syreeta, it’s clear that Seka is on the verge of a breakout.
A Match Made in Heaven
Seka’s introduction to the FLAMENCA team came through Toolroom Records, where his vibrant style and innovative sound were immediately recognized. Known for his Latin, Afro, and Percussive Tech influences, Seka describes ‘Cuccú’ as a “rolling club weapon” that perfectly embodies the start of summer. The track layers Arabesque instrumentation over intricate percussion and Latin rhythms, ensuring it resonates on dance floors worldwide.
“I’m a huge fan of Flamenca, STBAN, and the artists on the roster,” Seka shares. “I’m absolutely buzzing to be joining the family with ‘Cuccú.’ I really can’t wait to get this one out!”
The Genesis of ‘Cuccú’
When asked about the inspiration behind ‘Cuccú,’ Seka is visibly excited. The track leans heavily into the Afro and Latin sounds he loves, characterized by its intoxicating percussive energy. “It has that shoulder and hip-shaking vibe, a huge lead, and cool vocal hooks,” he explains. “I hope it resonates on the dance floor just as much as it did in the studio.”
An Introduction to FLAMENCA
Seka’s journey with FLAMENCA began when he sought feedback from Danny Rhys, a friend at Toolroom Records. Rhys believed that Seka’s track would fit perfectly with FLAMENCA’s ethos, leading to its signing. This moment was pivotal for Seka. “I was honestly blown away when they signed it,” he reflects. “When you look at the roster and what STBAN has built, it’s a huge honor to be welcomed onto the label.”
The Latin Connection
Despite hailing from the UK, Seka’s sound carries a distinct Latin flair. “The vibe is everything,” he says, noting how audiences instantly react to the rhythms he produces. His passion for Jazz, Latin, and Blues infuses his music with a strong percussive quality. “Rhythm and drums have always grabbed me first,” he adds, explaining that the transition to incorporating Latin influences felt instinctual.
“I wasn’t connecting with mainstream tech house sounds, but the Latin Tech side reminds me of old-school tech house,” he notes, describing his approach to music as grounded in dusty drums, rolling bass, and that irresistible groove.
Support from Radio Giants
Seka’s ascent has been bolstered by significant support from key figures in British radio. “Annie Mac is an idol of mine,” he shares. “Her shows were crucial in shaping my musical identity in dance music.” He recounts how surreal it was to hear her drop one of his tracks at the esteemed Warehouse Project.
Likewise, Arielle Free has been a steadfast advocate for him. “She’s easily been the biggest supporter of my music,” Seka states, reflecting on how her belief in his talent has opened doors. With endorsements from other notable presenters like Danny Howard, Jaguar, and Jeremiah Asiamah, Seka feels a surge of validation as he continues to navigate his career.
Toolroom Academy: A Launchpad
Seka attributes much of his success to connections made through Toolroom Academy. “Honestly, I wouldn’t be here without them,” he admits. His first big break came from a collaboration with fellow Academy students, leading to a record that was signed to Trax.
“The friends I’ve made and the mentorship I’ve received have shaped my trajectory,” he notes, particularly highlighting Danny Rhys as a significant figure in his development. “It has turned into some really important friendships.”
Memorable Performances
Last year, Seka played at UNVRS, a gig organized by Arielle Free. “It was not even on my bingo card for this decade, let alone last year,” he laughs. The experience of warming up at The Wild Comet and witnessing the audience vibe to his music was a defining moment. “The whole spectacle of the place was awe-inspiring.”
In addition, having played at Fatboy Slim’s iconic All Back To Minehead event, Seka describes receiving recognition from such a significant figure in dance music as “incredible.” He vividly remembers the nerves before taking the stage but ultimately describes it as “one of the best sets I’ve ever played.”
Awards and Recognition
Among his accolades, Seka won Best Producer at the Northampton Music Awards, which he found surreal while on holiday in Thailand. “I woke up to messages saying I had won, and I couldn’t believe it!” he recalls. “I celebrated with a few daiquiris by the pool that day, of course. Standard.”
Expanding His Reach
Having done a couple of BBC Introducing mixes, Seka emphasizes the importance of this platform in expanding his reach. “The local team has been massively supportive,” he says, reflecting on the opportunity to headline a BBC Introducing event in his hometown, where he faced an appreciative audience.
Influences and Aspirations
When discussing influences, Seka mentions Marco Lys as his inspiration for groove, admiring his longstanding integrity in the scene. He expresses a desire to achieve that kind of longevity in his own career. He also aspires to collaborate with influential artists like Arielle Free, given her instrumental role in his rise.
With an undeniable blend of talent, dedication, and charm, Seka is poised to make significant waves in the music scene. With the infectious rhythms of ‘Cuccú’ now circulating in clubs and playlists, this rising star’s future is as vibrant as the sounds that fuel his creativity.
